The term is for women's undergarments, however in the North American Culture, the term is highly eroticised and many consider lingerie to be a sexier form of undergarments. Besides the fig leaf made popualr in the time of greece, this was the start of lingerie, undergarments making attempts to change the shape of ones body. The history of Lingerie began in around the mid 18th century.
Crinolines, Corsets and Bustles are pieces of lingerie that really affected women's lives between the years of 1811 and 1880's. Lingerie took a more fashionable and sexy turn in the early 1830's when women started wearing laced corsets. Some forms of lingerie were starting to be produced that were considered to be purely erotic, such as the "fale buttocks".

The manufactures of lingerie however kept going, and kept producing more and more light-weight lingerie. By the 70's it was all over and lingerie started coming back in the fashion lime-light fashion. There are many types of lingerie and are so rooted in the north american culture that lingerie is here to stay.
