As long as people have lived, there has been a need to make your body more physically attractive then it is, and that is what cosmetics are used for.

Cosmetics have been being used for ages, some argue that they have been used for as long as there has been people on this earth to use them to help beautify themselves. Face Painting, is mentioned in documents of the old days, such as the Old Testament, and cosmetics such as eye shadow was used in the years of 10,000 BC, by the egyptions in their burials.

Egyptions did not stop with producing cosmetics with eye-shadow, they also created perfumes for Cosmeticswomen. Some people speculate these cosmetic perfumes were created by first burning resins and gums to create a scent. Plants that were also richly scenty, could be insterted or infused into oils, made out of vegetables or animals, and could be used for everyday use or pleasure. Cosmetics were used by both men and women in this time as is now.

In around 10,000 BC both men and women used cosmetics when they bathed to soften and clean their skin, and also to make any body odor ( similar to the deodorant we used today ). They also had a cosmetic named Kohl, which was a very dark colored power, and they would heavily line their lips, eyes and eyebrows with this Kohl Cosmetic. Kohl was also believed it could cure ones hindered eyesight. In this picture to the right, you see a woman wearing the cosmetic known as Kohl. This cosmetic is of a very dark color, and was worn heavily around the eyes and sometimes on tje lips, and gave off a very royal yet beautifying effect.

Cosmetics were a very important part of the Early Egyption culture. They would also use Creams and Oils, they would help to protect the skin from the dry winds and hot sun that were contstant the in the egyption climate. Other cultures besides the Egyptions were using cosmetics in their lifestyle, lets take a look at some early cultures and how they used cosmetics.

Greek citizens used cosmetics in many ways in their life. In greece, cosmetic powders, hair dyes, precious oils, beauty unguents, eye shadows and perfumes were all being used inversally. These cosmetics started becoming very popular, and the export of these items actually caused a very important trade route to form. In the 8th and 7th century BC, cosmetics were flurishing and the greece controlled the market in the flasked perfumes.

For many centuries, a pale face was actually the desired look, and there were cosmetics available to help you achiefe this look. There was a huge price to pay to use the original cosmetic to achieve a pale face, and it was lead poisining. They didnt find an alterantive cosmetic until the 19th century, and that is what is still used today -- i facial powder made out of zinc oxide.

As time kept moving forward, and we got closer to the 20th century and hollywood started taking over the fashion world, the pale face fell more out of fashion and was replaced by the tanned look. And still just like in the past, if you cant get your skin to tan naturally, you can still have sun-kissed skin by using a tanning cosmetic.

Now that the new fashion is taking over, cosmetics are mainly used to make someone look younger. Many women in this lifetime (early 1900's) didn't eat very healthy, and many didn't excercise, and the air pollution was very heavy at this time period. All these factors made most women wear cosmetics on a everyday basis in order to achieve a younger look.

Up until the 20th century, cosmetics were actually never sold in a open market. In 1909, in london Cosmeticsa salon known as Selfridges, was opened and changed the cosmetic world forever. This salon did not hide its cosmetics under the counter, and were sold in the public in the store, in a open market. Women became more confident, and more women started using cosmetics and didnt care what other people thought if they didnt approve (Because they knew they looked good!). Also permanent Cosmetics was invented. These cosmetics are tatooed onto ones body part, usually their lips, chick or eyebrows.

permanent cosmetics were made out of vivid colors and would not fade and never have to be replaced, and these are still very popular to this date. As the years moved on, cosmetic use kinda came in and out. During the last 1920's, dark red became a fave among lipstick colors, with a never ending arrangement of shades available. Cosmetics like always, followed suit with dark red soon moving to also the fingernails, but toenails were mainly of contrast in a light pink color.

The 21st century hits and now cosmetics are full speed and no stopping. There has been a lunch of high-end manufacturers, with companies such as Mary Kay, Avon, Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder and L'Oreal all manufacturing cosmetics across the board. They all bring their own sense of style and design to the table. The best part is, with so many players in the cosmetic fashion game, the person in the best position is you, the buyer. Any type of cosmetic you could dream of, and some you couldn't are available these days, no matter what the look you are going for, you will be able to find numerous cosmetics to help give you the result.
