While the two piece bathing suit we have come to known and love called the bikini, has only been around for 60 years, it is said that the trends which inspired its design have been around since almost the begining of civilization itself. Bikinis can be found in paintings that are dated to be as old as from the 1500 BC. time period. Mosiac paintings found in around the year 250 AD bikinis were found in the minoan civilization, so it was pretty obvious that the bikinis history began much earlier then the year 1946 -- although it is still when it was exploded. The bikini was designed and released at almost the same exact time, by two seperate french designers, their names were Jacques Heim and Louis Reard. Heims was a long time swimwear designer, who was working on a two piece suit that would be sold at his beach store. In the same year as he was releasing his bikini, Reard also was producing his very similar two piece bikini. The first official introduction of the bikini into fashion took place on July 5th, 1946 when the French model Micheline Bernardini paraded in a bikini during a French fashion show. The americans who attended the show, simply thought the bikini was way to revealing. Many americans simply believed that the bikini was way to scandalous for american women to wear, but the bikini made its american release only a year later. Even though this reaction of the bikinis being to small, the original bikinis that were designed in the 1940's and 1950's were fairly modest with their coverage compared to the standards of bikinis today. Bottoms of the bikini were cut above the naval, and the tops of bikinis offered entire breast coverage.
In the 1970's, the United States went over a rapid and shocking sexual revolution. Women became much more sexually aware of their bodies, and the fashion and clothing of that time and then onward proved such. Bikini designers revamped the original bikini to be much more revealing. The bottoms of the bikini were cut much lower, and revealed the naval for the first time (In America), and lied just on the hips. The top also left very little to ones imagination, as their coverage was similar to your average bra. The thong bikini was released in the 1980's, and became very popular in the USA. Some bikini designers said that their inspiration for the thong bikini, came from brazil, and the traditional clothing of the amazonion tribes which lived there. Throughout the following years of the 1990's, and 2006's, bikini designers continually changed the look and and came out with new styles for the loved swimwear known as the bikini. Different varities of the bikini started being introduced and some became very popular, such as the tankini. In the very short time (59 years as of 2005) the bikini has become the prime choice for most women, especially the younger fit women as their choice of swimwear. In this short period time the bikini has repeatedly shocked the world as it grew tinier and tinier in size. The history of the bikini is far from finished, in the grand scheme of things it only begone, as the fashion and swimsuit designers around the world continue to expand on, expirement and push the envelope with the bikini -- the smallest bathing suit known to man. |
